Anyone experience problems renting with dogs or how to go about it? Looking for a house outside Dublin…preferably Meath….just wondering if it’s a big no no???? Any advice would be appreciated.

most of my friends are renting with dogs some had to pay extra just in case of damages but will get back once every thing is fine.
hopefully some on the site might have more experience with it :)

Whilst I’ve no personal experience of this, I know of at least three different people / families that are currently renting, with dogs. One family has a lovely landlord and they originally moved in with their labrador and have since got a massive newfie pup (the size of a pony!) and its not been a problem with their landlord, provided there is no damage. Obviously you will be liable to cover any costs that your doggie may incur through destructive behaviour etc. Its much more socially acceptable these days, thankfully, to allow dogs into rented. I would suggest that perhaps you could find someplace suitable first, and if possible, meet landlord in person, ideally with your dog, and check if the dog is allowed – have always found face to face better in such situations than the phone. Have asked the people I know who are currently renting with dogs and each of them just got lucky in terms of running it by their landlord, i.e., didnt go to special site etc to seek accommodation. Usually, unfortunately, its the neighbours who can be difficult where dogs are concerned – sometimes they’re peeved enough that a property is rented and they look for any and every excuse to complain to landlord; the dog can often be the tin hat on any complaint! Sorry couldnt be more helpful Bronte. Best of luck in your search!

I rent and there was nothing in agreement regards pets, in fact the letting agency told me the landlord didnt mind. Until he called one nite to fix an appliance and i had my ex foster Annabelle staying while her family were away and he was less than impressed (to be honest i think he scared of dogs).
So my word of warning would be to ask landlord/lady directly. During this economic climate more people are renting with pets and so landlords must be sympathic to this. I can understand if they require carpet cleaning at end of lease, or furniture chewed replaced etc, but i would not allow them to increase the rent as it wont stop them keeping the deposit regardless.

Daft.ie have a section for pets allowed properties. Just tick the box in advanced search. As long as you’re honest with the landlord there’s usually no prob. Im renting with a dog and landlord has been great about it from day one.

i think your best bet is to ask the landlord before you move in .. thats was i did .. some will say no and some say yes .. alot of landlords are just happy once you agree to pay ffor any damage that may me caused by your dog !! but there is no harm in asking :)
ive always rented and always had dogs so im sure there are many many nice enough landords that will allow you to have one …or many hehe

    good luck !!!!!!!

we just asked the landlord when we first viewed our place. he wasn’t thrilled with the idea but said that if we agreed to pay a higher security deposit in case of damages it would be okay. we had him write it into our lease and haven’t had any probs…like someone said before, its a tough market now so they have to be more flexible with this kind of thing…

Thanks for your adice everyone :D . I will defininitely ask and bring them along when viewing. I have 3 of them which I am afraid might shock a few landlords/ladies but they are only chihuahua size so I can only hope they will have an open mind….
