Note to say Nellie is settling very well with us, she and the other 3 dogs (one of them is Cassidy, another ex-Ashton girl – makes it sound like a posh boarding school) are getting along so far. Nellie and Dudley (Border Terrier) were tearing around last night with various toys, Nellie destroyed a tennis ball, then a rubber parsnip (it used to have a squeak in it but my old GSD removed that ages ago), she then got hold of twisted rope toy and so far that has survived. She still sleeps in a large crate at night (they all sleep in my room so she is not alone) and this morning was the first morning she didn’t want out the second I fell out of bed, the rest were still sleeping so she was following suit. She comes to work with me and is greatly admired by all who have met her. She clearly has built in springs in her paws, she can jump a fair old height with very little apparent effort. She has been on the sideboard twice, dining room table once and my desk at work 3 times, Nellie knows no fear! She eats with the other dogs and if she doesn’t finish her biscuits she will eat them if I take them from the dish (one or two at a time) and put them on the floor so she is eating her full meals just in a slightly odd way. For her first foster family, I have retained the Abi part of her name by combining Nellie and Abi (proper name is now Nellabi), the family call her Nellie and I tend to call her Nells. Tried to get a photograph last night but she had either left the shot altogether or just her tail was photographed as she was leaving the shot. We will stay in touch, and are delighted to have Nells live with us and long may our shared journey last a very long time.

December 13, 2009 at 4:30 pm #91162IndiannaMemberNells continues to spread her magic dust wherever she goes. Took her back to the vet last Saturday for the second part of her vaccination. Cassie has a bit of a stomach upset so she also went. Cassie was examined first and a school girl in ‘seeing practice’ held Nellie’s lead while Cassie was examined. I changed dogs while the vet was washing her hands and I had put Nells onto the consulting table. When the vet turned round she stopped in her tracks when she saw Nellie, we had the usual "what a lovely little dog, where did you get her, she is great, can’t believe SHE was in a pound". Then the vet (having bent down to the level of the table and looking closely at Nells, said, she is a very nice example of the breed, good top line and her hind legs are great. Little dogs usually have very upright hind legs and therefore problems with their kneecaps but she is beautiful". Its ALMOST getting boring. I have started to wonder if we have all fallen under some sort of Nell spell and that she really is a horror but we all see the complete opposite. Who knows, I don’t care, she is great. The crate has now been put away and Nells sleeps in a dog bed in my room, sadly the rest of the mob are ON the bed. The next big thing for Nellie is to learn to sit while the front door is opened and wait until she is allowed to go out. It might take me 150 years to train her to do that but I will persist. I have heard her bark a couple of times and its really funny, not what I would have thought at all. I have heard plenty of the yipping when she gets really excited but not much barking. She is great in the car and just lies down. I am trying to stop her frantic licking, I assume that is stress? Anyone have any thoughts or tips on that one? That is it for the moment, she has to get ready for work tomorrow. We (Nells and I) are on holiday from 18th December until ?? 27th or 28th December so lots of walking, playing in the garden with all the dogs and training. Cassie has not been sick today at all, that is good but she is back to the vet tomorrow morning (8.30 a.m.) to have blood taken which I will take to the lab at work. Vet just wants to check her kidney function and other routine things. She (Cassie, not the vet) remains bright, keen to go for walks and would eat but was being sick every few days. She has a bit of a temperature but we hope she has just picked up a bit of a bug. We know she has various health issues so needs to have her blood checked to ensure nothing horrible is going on. Fingers crossed everyone, we need her back to normal. Since her arrival 16 months ago (can hardly believe that) and all the grime and ‘orangeness’ has gone our slightly grubby old girld has turned into a sparkling diamond. She is absolutely charming and I would be totally devastated if anything happened to her. I would feel the same for all our dogs but Cassie really has worked her way into our hearts in a very short time, it feels like she has been a member of our family for years. My wise old girl. Nellie is now sitting on her grand-dad’s knee because we put the fire off. Oh, its such a hard life!

sounds like you’re doing a great job with nells. with regards to the frantic licking, she used to do that with me all the time and jumping up on me on the sofa. what i used to to was to put her back down on the floor or move her away from me every single time saying ‘no nellie’ after a while she gave in and realised i meant business because i never once let her away with it. i think because of her age and because she has been moved around a bit she is a bit insecure but all thi will settle down with time and consistency.December 29, 2009 at 4:08 pm #91990animalhelperMemberDecember 29, 2009 at 5:04 pm #92006IndiannaMemberThank you so much for putting Nellabi and Cassies’ photos on the site, as you can see we have had quite a lot of snow. Nells bells is getting along very well, never seems to put on any weight but us very lively. Just about to go and feed them. Good news about Kenny.
January 5, 2010 at 11:34 am #92265IndiannaMemberThis is the expression Nellabi has on her face when she realises she IS expected to go outside for toilet duties. Not happy but I can’t blame her, we have about 18-20 inches of snow and the people who know Nells will know that she is half that size and she does feel the cold. Cassie dashes out, does what she has to do and races back in, elderly GSD rushes out and will not come back in and the Border Terrier tip-toes to where the snow is at it least and sits there barking and will not come in. They are not getting out for walks because everywhere is covered in ice and snow and is very, very slippy. If the dogs started running gooness knows where we would end up. I should be back at work now but can’t get the car out, so we are all getting a bit ‘stir-crazy’. Nells bells get a ball and walks about so proudly with it, she lets us look at her prize but she will not give it up, EVERYONE who has met her thinks she is wonderful and indeed she is. I still can’t believe she landed in the pound but am very grateful to the people who didn’t turn up to get her, I really should thank them. I hope Izzie (the GSD) gets out soon, has she got a home or is she going to another rescue? Lovely dog.
January 11, 2010 at 1:42 pm #89285IndiannaMemberNellabi is getting along very well indeed. All mutts are perfect with each other now and she is always first, second, third and fourth in line for any treats. She parades around with a tennis ball in her mouth, will not ‘give’ it but I can take it. Very funny when she has 2 tennis balls, one in the mouth and the other being batted around, she does try to bury them but only when she has 2 balls. Once buried she then digs like mad to find it/them again, all great fun. She was a great hiderence to me yesterday when I was trying to clean the washing machine filter. Had her face in the bit that had water coming out of it which I was trying to catch in a dish, then she paddled around the in the water I was trying to mob up! She pops up on the table at the window if I go out (to try and clear snow). My father said she is like an aircraft taking off. She runs across the floor, up onto the chair, onto the back of the chair and flies across the void between the back of the chair and the table. She then sits perfectly happily looking out of the window. The howling has stopped now, thank goodness. She hates the snow but she is very small and the snow is VERY deep. She has a couple of coats to wear when out and about, wasn’t too sure at first but is OK now. Still greatly admired by all who see/meet her, one woman lost her place in a large queue in Pets at Home to come and speak to her. She will be getting spayed at the end of January beginning of February which I am not looking forward to at all, but I know it has to be done. My Border Terrier needs his teeth cleaned so I will book them in at the same time and they can keep each other company before their anaesthetics. We wll stay in touch and I will get some photos posted on the site soon.
January 14, 2010 at 7:42 am #87781IndiannaMemberWell, the dreaded day has been arranged. Nells bells will be getting spayed on the 22nd January and Dudley will be in at the same time for his dental. She and I went to the practice last night to get another supply of tablets for Cassie, sadly we discovered that her kidneys and liver are starting to fail. She is doing very well on her tablets and we are hoping that will continue for a long time to come. Needless to say when I was waiting for Cassie’s drugs to be sorted out a man sitting in reception spoke to Nells bells, saying how beautiful she is, he has a terrier, great dogs, she relly is a lovely little dog, where did she come from – A POUND? "Oh, I would have taken her if I saw her in a pound", "wonder why she ended up in a pound, I would take her, she really is beautiful, etc, etc, etc! He was horrified that I had booked her in to be spayed, he said "she would have great pups". I agreed but said that would NOT be happening and she WAS going to be spayed much as I hated the thought of her having to have surgery. So, that is where we are at the moment and we have had a bit more snow!!! I am now totally convinced that Nellabi must have had pups and Robyn is one of them – they are so similar its spooky.

Nellabi enjoying the snow – in reality she is waiting for treats to land. This is my first attempt with photobucket so I hope it works. If it does then I am extremely grateful to jenbear for leading me through the instructions.January 19, 2010 at 11:17 pm #92770ColganFamilyMemberHer guide is brilliant!!
It helped me and also a lot of people!
January 19, 2010 at 11:37 pm #92773fayresMemberHey Indianna, Nellie will be fine. No need to be worried at all. You’d be amazed how these little doggies bounce back and recover from surgery Our little Elsie will be returning to the vet to have her stitches out on Saturday and has made a fantastic recovery.
January 20, 2010 at 9:12 am #92780IndiannaMemberThank you for the support regarding Nells spaying Fayres, the date has been put back a week because the vet who will be doing the surgery is not in on the 22nd so its now the 29th. Still hate the thought of it though. So pleased the Fearless Fairy is through her surgery, she is great – isn’t she?
