Just a heads up for all using Royal Canin, just got a bag in pet mania, theres €8.00 off the 4kg bags until the end of the month. The one i use is medium adult 25, but im sure the whole range is discounted but maybe call to check before you make the trip!
March 18, 2010 at 3:42 pm #95385DogsBestFriendMemberThanks for sharing! Tesco (Clearwater, Finglas but prob other stores also) having promotions on pet food at the mo. Bakers has at least 5 – 9 euros off the large sack for those of you who use it! Also got a nice surprise when we bought a travel crate for our latest rescue, Roxy, there on Tuesday evening – a lot of the prices on the shelf were incorrect. When I queried the manager, as I had thought the price of the travel crate was very cheap compared to Petstop, he gave me another incorrect price (28.99) and when we got to the till, delighted with the price, we discovered it was in fact another 6 euro cheaper! Doesnt sound much but when you’ve three permanently hungry doggies to feed, every little helps!!
March 18, 2010 at 4:53 pm #95389sassychickMemberHi just wondering i use royal canin at the mo but ruby is not to fussy on it what is bakers like does anyone know??Ive cn it in the supermarket….or am i just better perservering with boxer 26 from royal canin she will eat it if i mix tuna or tin food thru it but will never eat it on its own any advice would be appreciated
March 18, 2010 at 5:04 pm #95390AnonymousMemberDefinately stick with Royal Canin or choose another of the high quality brands. Supermarkets foods on a whole tend to be full of sugar and additives and will have her hyper. They also can cause long term illness later in life like diabetes etc. They are similar to eating fast food for us everyday. Unfortunately when it comes to dogs you need to be cruel to be kind either keep reducing the amount of tuna you are mixing over a period of a few days or get salmon oil and mix it either and eventually she should eat it dry. Or just play it tough and leave it there until she eats it, once she gets hungry enough she will eat it and you shouldnt have further problems. The reason she is not eating it is that she has worked out there is often something better to go into her bowl if she doesn’t. Either that or try a few different foods and see if she likes them. You can usually get good quality foods in free sample bags in pet shops. You could also try her on the Royal Canin Maxi (Blue bag) which she might prefer.
March 18, 2010 at 5:09 pm #95388dogluversMemberThe bakers is a little step up from pedigree chum , still not a whole lot in it for the dog more additives and stuff…. The RC is very good i have all mine on it and if i find they get a little bit fussed about it i just add some tuna into but the dogs get salmon oil anyway in there food so that normally makes it tasty for them…
Any off the brands you get in the supermarket dont have an awfull lot in them bit like mcdonalds for us.. As feeding dogs can be expensive and your strapped for cash most pet shops do red mills which is just alright bet better than bakers or ped chum. They do a large bag of winner for €25 which is in the lesser grade then they do leader which is of higher quility than the winner and a bit more expensive again.. But the best ones out there are the RC , Hills, JWB , Burns , the ones you buy in the vets are very good.
Hope this helps.. there is also loads of info up on food and nutriance in FAQ’s
March 18, 2010 at 9:19 pm #95405angjoMemberHi, I give my dogs RC and I was just wondering about the salmon oil. Firstly where do you get it? Can you use it all the time? I find I do mix some liquid in with the RC, sometimes a spoon of veg soup or some carrot. I use the mini bites as they seem to prefer that size
March 18, 2010 at 9:59 pm #95407dogluversMemberThe equipet shops sell salmon oil but i order it online and this is the one i get.. I brilliant for the dog and there coats ect they just get a pump or so depending on the size of dog in there fed daily..
March 18, 2010 at 10:16 pm #95410louisabyrne1980MemberOurs love Royal Canin dry or with some probiotic yoghurt or fish oils mixed through we sometimes give them sardines as a treat in their food too.Sometimes as an extra special treat if my mum has mad a sunday roast they have some mash and meat mixed through! Royal Canin makes a huge difference in their behaviour and temprament We have 3 boys who are all 2 and the RC also keeps their coats glossy and shiny. All of our foster pups have also had RC and love it too. Once they get used to it there is no turning back.
March 19, 2010 at 2:29 pm #95440clairefMemberThere is a pet superstore in Newtownmountkennedy in Wicklow (for anyone out this way!) They offer a great discount if you are buying your food from them on a regular basis. They also put you on a list so your food is available as you need it. I have my 2 on the RC Maxi JR 32 which is normally about €68.00 euro for 15kgs but I get it for about €55 which is quite a good discount on the RC! I pick up a 15kg bag about every 3 weeks. They also stock Red Mills, Hills and James Well Beloved as well as a good few other big brands.

We changed Jessie to Red Mills and she seems to like it just as much and she’s much less smelly than on the RC she was having before. We tried it because the trainer that came to see us gave us a voucher for €10 off. For the large bags it’s about 10-15 € cheaper if I remember correctly.
Is it a good food? It is much drier than RC I noticed!
March 19, 2010 at 5:58 pm #95464angjoMemberThanks Dogluvers for website, I will order on line and I must check out the newtown shop as I don’t live far from it.

i use a very good own brand called select gold. its very like royal canine, very similar composition but cheaper
they also do it in lamb and salmon oil, ideal for the doggies coats. my 2 really like it and their coats look great on it.
you can bring your dog with you and get them weighed so you know exactly how much to feed them.March 21, 2010 at 11:53 am #95538dogluversMemberTanx for the advice everyone im goin to leave her on the rc and try some salmon oil…is it not bad for them to have too much omega 3??like would you use the oil everyday just to make it mre interesting….im sorry if dats a stupid question i just want the best for her [/quote:3ldb4lzt]
It says on the bottle how much i.e. pumps to give your dog depending on the weight of your dog, so if you go by the advised amount it will be find. I give it to my dogs daily and my GSD was going very grey and dull (she is 6yrs in october) and in 3 weeks of being on the salmon oil she has really darkened and has a beautiful shine from her coat again..
