Sorry, didnt know what to write in the subject bar! We adopted Frodo almost 3 weeks ago and are loving every second of having him with us. Except… his flatulence! I am aware that all dogs (and indeed humans ) pass wind from time to time and I am aware from talking to others that dogs gas is extremely smelly. So basically I am not complaining but I am worried however that our little guy may have a problem- the smell is absolutely indescribable. Guests have beat a hasty retreat from the house after one of his silent but deadlys! He actually cant even bear the smell himself- trys to leave the room after doing one!! Can anyone advise (a) if this level of TOXIC smell is normal and (b) is there anything we should be doing or should we see the vet??
Frodo is almost 5 months old. He is walked 2-3 times a day (usually one long walk and two short ones). He eats Hills dry puppy food twice a day.
Any advice would be gratefully appreciated!
May 3, 2010 at 12:35 am #97710DID RescueKeymasterThis is always linked with the digestive system so maybe try the following…………
1. Probiotic Youghurt one teaspoon one a day for four days and continue this routine after worming.
2. The food he is on may not agree with him. Maybe try Royal Canin Puppy either Mini or Medium, depending on what his adult weight will be approx.
You can get sample packs to try but do take ten days to change over if you do change the food.
All dogs are different and some will suit some food better than others.
This problem is not acceptable from the human point of view but it can be fixed and all that is happening is his digestive system is not happy.
You do not need a vet visit to sort this out but if you need more info please feel free to phone me.
I do know about nutrition as I have done Nutritional Advisor in Stores for Nutro, Nutram and Royal Canin.May 3, 2010 at 10:58 am #97724jdogs2010Memberhey shauna, we noticed this once or twice when he was with us so possibly it is the food? our beagle had to have her food changed due to allergies and her SBD’s have stopped (she was AWFUL!!)
May 3, 2010 at 12:04 pm #97728wivMemberHi there, I see that you have frodo on Hills, I’ve always fed my dog Hills too, until I read the review on dogfoodanalysis.com. I’ve now changed to Orijen. It’s well worth a look if you feed your dog Hills, Royal Canin, Byrnes etc..shocking stuff!!

May 4, 2010 at 4:53 pm #97782DogsBestFriendMemberWould agree with everything Twist says. Our dal had an awful problem with wind as well, and like Frodo, would cry every time she dropped one and would literally run away from her own smell! Every time we had visitors and she did it, we could tell that they thought we were doing a Shep and blaming it on the poor dog If you have the time, I found this recipe to be very good for our girl, though every dog is different. All ingredients are doggie friendly (unless Frodo has a particular food sensitivity to any of the ingredients listed):
A CRUNCHY CURE FOR WIND
9 oz (250g) gluten free flour (from bigger supermarkets/health food shop)
1 egg
3 tablespoons olive oil
4 fl oz (125ml) skimmed milk
1 teaspoon each of finely chopped mint and parsleyMix the flour, egg, olilve oil and milk to make a dough, not too firm, adding a little water or flour if necessary. Finally mix in the chopped herbs.
Preheat oven to 345F (175c). Cover a baking sheet with baking parchment.Put portions of the dough into an icing bag and squeeze out onto a baking sheet (or just use a spoon!). Bake in the hot oven for 15 – 20 mins. Turn off the heat and allow the biscuits to dry for another hour in the oven, but watch they dont burn as the oven will still be hot!
Hope this helps! (I can smell him from here!!!!!)
