 HURRICANE WENDY HAS LANDED!
A whirlwind has blown into the house in the shape of whippet (mostly it seems) Wendy. :D
After a rather travel sick journey home she is keeping Bax busy.
She loves play fighting and biting his ears and he is such a good and patient and tolerant boy. He is reaching new status (if that’s possible) in our eyes. She is still very much a pup and given to puppy behaviour but Baxter is a really good role model and showing her the ropes.
On her first night she whimpered and scratched at the door for a few minutes then again about and hour later a couple of times but then silence until morning. Last night she went straight to sleep and not a peep out of her.

Doesn’t she look like butter wouldn’t melt??? Don’t believe it. That’s mischief shining in those innocent eyes.
Wendy follows Bax everwhere and copies what he does. She has had a couple of accidents in the house so we are hoping she will copy him in this respect too as I’m sure she will when she settles down to a routine. They have exhausted themselves playing and poor Bax needs matchsticks to keep his eyes open.
Here they are muching on identical marrow bones.

It’s amazing to think how great they are together in only two days
and just as Wendy is learning so Bax is getting the company he needs even though it’s from a mischievous child!
They are playing tug of war behind me as I write.
But there’s nothing like a good snuggle and a snooze on the sofa with your favourite big bro. :P Aaah.

She is such a good girl on her walks too. We have tried her off the lead and she just trots along and loves all the fine country smells.
The two look great together, I’ll get some shots of them on a walk an keep you posted.

I haven’t felt much like posting anything up here lately after my little Hallie passed away but as we all know, life goes on and Baxter is the true champion of our hearts.
He has been, how to describe it, ‘not himself’ since Hallie died. He is very jumpy and goes from really playful to morose as if he’s saying ‘it’s not so much fun around here without my pal’.
He seems to be on the alert all the time as if he is looking out for her.
My son wonders whether he thinks he is going to have to go too as he saw Hallie come and go and is feeling a bit insecure.
He is also sticking close by and likes to position himself between all parties, i.e. on the chair in the hall where he can monitor everyone’s activities. He is looking for extra affection too. That’s no hardship on our part though and can have all he wants and a bit extra too.
We have started taking him swimming and he loves it so much. I remember in earlier posts before he came to us how he was fascinated by water.

The first time we took him to this lake he swam and swam and was in bits for days after and couldn’t even lift or wag his tail! Poor boy. He must have been so stiff.
He is great now and looks like a shiny seal pup! He is such a powerful swimmer. It is amazing to see, he is totally at home in the water and even dives looking for things with his rear in the air!

I took some photos of him in the water and with his friend Lottie. Lottie is scared to go out very far and would nip at him and yelp and steal his sticks.

Hallie used to look at them from the safety of the bank as if they had gone completely mad. She was far too much of a lady to get all wet and bedraggled thank you very much!
I tried to download a video but nothing happened. It’s a pity as it’s a wonderful sight.
Kathy, thank you so much for all your support. You have been wonderful.

Thank you so much Mona for your lovely words, it means so much and clairef I said the same thing yesterday. You know you are taking a risk to love a creature so much but if you don’t risk it you don’t get the joy it brings and without love life is nothing.
Bax is getting so much extra love right now and he has given us so much. Hallie might have been only a little girl but she has left a big hole. She was a precious gem dogsrule.
I missed her so much on our walk tonight, trotting along behind so she didn’t get bashed by Bax’s sticks. She had it worked out so well.
She loved her walks and queued up with Bax to have her collar put on at the front door. She was a real little darling and even ended up being friends with our two cats.
I just hope she didn’t suffer but by the looks of things she just fell asleep and knew no more.

Thank you so much everybody for your replies and kind words.
It really means a lot when you are mourning the loss of a beloved pet. It’s comforting to know that there are others out there who understand that it’s not ‘just a dog’ but a member of your family.
Hallie was such a little sweetheart and I can’t believe she’s gone.
She is sorely missed by us all.

Our gorgeous little Hallie passed away on Saturday evening and we are devastated.
She went to sleep and never woke up. We don’t know what happened except to say that she was in a normal sleeping position and looked so peaceful.

She had developed into a really happy and contented little dog and was so easy to look after yet such great company and so funny. I like to think we gave her a happy and loving home.

My poor Baxter is a lost soul and I know he misses her.
I wrapped her in her little lambswool blanket and Bax gave her a kiss and watched as we buried her in the garden under a special laburnum tree between our beautiful Paddy and Gaby. They will look after her now.
RIP little Hallie Boo, we loved you dearly X

    Hi Aggie,
Yes maybe it is a lab trait with the fetching thing obsession and the nudges and whine/yips if you ignore them.

Bax’s latest skill is opening doors. He is really good at this now. Unfortunately the handles, loosened by my Paddy (is it possible his ghost is roaming around our house and teaching Bax all his old tricks?)come off in your hand when you go to open a door! :o All the screws are useless now so I think we may have to buy some new hardware.
He hasn’t quite got the hang of the walking backwards having pushed the handle down yet but I’m sure he will given time………………….!
My son once went to the front door to find two women standing with their mouths agape saying, ‘Your dog just opened the door to us!’
They couldn’t believe it. Paddy was such a character.

Bax also loves the dishwasher, especially when there’s gravy on the plates being loaded! I’d be interested to know what kind of a contraption he thinks it is.
I have finished work now so I will have a bit more time and so hopefully get those pics up.

Thanks for your comments guys. I am interested, Twist, to hear what you say about Hallie’s origins. I must look up Wheaten Terrier. She is a funny little mixture alright. I think she has a bit of a Fox Terrier about her head with her long face and her forward pointing ears. Maybe that’s the other bit of the cross! :D
Hi Aggie, love the pics of Trinity, she is such a beauty and really reminds me of Bax with her gorgeous black glossy looks and her knowing expression!
Must get the pics up of these two soon!

Just wanted to reassure everyone that Baxy boy boy, as my granddaughter has named him is thriving and continues to bring us infinite joy along with little Hallie. They are chalk and cheese these two but so great together.
Bax is the clumsiest, nosiest dog I have ever come across.
He is really funny. He is so affectionate and so gorgeous to cuddle.
He has a small hard orange ball I bought for Hallie and he has comandeered it and he throws it about for hours. He puts it in the bin, on the table, in your lap, in the dishwasher, on the chair, under the chair, in your pocket, you name it and it’s been there and he keeps bringing it back to be thrown for him ALL THE TIME!!!!!!
We are all exhausted by the end of the evening if one of these moods strikes him.
I am still trying to stop him jumping up at people and us and even though he’s not as bad, he still does it and he is such a lump it’s painful. This is only in greeting and then he settles.
I read in a book about dog language that turning your back helps. Well sometimes it does and sometimes it doesnt. Also yawning is supposed to be a calming signal.
If anyone has any bright ideas I’d be happy to hear them.
He is such a beautiful boy though and is a picture of health and happiness and so good and clean. He has NEVER had an accident in the house and I think that’s pretty good going.
I do have some pics and will try to get them up soon.
