Thanks so much everyone. We got the overall result of the post mortem which was that he died of widespread bacterial septic pneumonia (which didn’t respond to antibiotics obviously enough). They’re awaiting test results to tell us why on earth such a healthy young dog would succumb to such a thing, and so quickly. Whether the test results will tell us anything or not remains to be seen. I think whatever the case, there was nothing that could have been done. He was at the vet within six hours of the first hint of sickness and he had been at the vet three weeks previously for his jabs. In fact, at that time the vet had complimented us on his excellent condition and perfect weight (was rather proud).
All I can say is that if that’s the time George had, well, he had it good, and so did we. We will hopefully have another dog in time but he was just so special. So glad to have had him for those few years.
grainneMemberHi guys, I’m utterly heartbroken to let you know that our much loved George died last week. We adopted him from you three and a half years ago. He was listed as a corgi x (eventually I decided he was basset crossed with staffie) and I just fell in love with him. He came to us on the day of Barack Obama’s inauguration and became the most amazing member of our family. He was amazing when our son was born and during the grabby toddler time. Nothing was better than bringing George on the beach and flinging a ball for him. That was good for the soul, I swear.
So we don’t know what happened. He started showing signs of illness on Monday lunchtime so we brought him to the vet, expecting to be told not to be so silly, that he was fine. Honestly, he was such a healthy, energetic dog. The vet kept him in, by Thursday morning we had to transfer him to UCD where he died the following day. It couldn’t have been poison or anything like that. They’re going to do a post mortem. The vet seemed to think that it may have been some manner of acute cancer. He was only four. We did everything right as dog owners. It seems so unfair when so many poor dogs are neglected that our friend was taken away.
We are devastated. He has left such a space in our home. Just wanted to thank you for choosing us for him. If he only had that amount of time I’m glad he had it with us. We loved him so much.
George.jpggrainneMemberHi all, We adopted George back in January. He’s getting on really well. It’s a nice life being a dog I’ve decided. I’d say he’s about 14 months old or thereabouts now and he’s settled in really well. He’s a funny little chap. He’s so bright and has loads of energy. He gets massive walks everyday which keeps that in check and he’s begun swimming which I never thought he’d do because his little legs are so short for his big body.
It has always been a case of day by day with George. He is perfectly behaved for days at a time and just as you think he is finally where you want him to be, he goes and eats a wall or something. Those days are getting fewer and fewer but he is hilarious.
He has his funny little personality. He hides every single bone or treat you give him. Buries them mostly and then brings them out weeks later when they’re really mucky and disgusting.
He’s good though. I will put up with any number of quirks, chewing, shedding (constantly!) for a dog who is just so good with people and other dogs. A little two year old toddled up to him when we were walking and before I could do anything she slapped him on the nose (she meant to pet) anyhow George didn’t even blink.
He is just wonderful. Never a dull moment. It’s been a tough enough year, and he’s like an instant de-stresser. He likes us too. Steve is the soft touch and I’m the boss. I wonder what it’ll be like when we have kids? Just the same I’d say…
Anyhow, thanks guys. So far so good.

grainneMemberEek! I didn’t mean them to be so big. Anyhow, you get the idea. We love George, very very much…
grainneMembergrainneMembergrainneMemberHi all,
I was a little afraid to post too soon in case a major issue presented itself but so far, our little George is an absolute gem. He seems to have settled in really well. It’s really funny. He has toys, but he tends to hide them around the place and then plays with them in rotation. We’ve become accustomed to sitting on our couch and finding a chewy bone wedged between the cushions. We’re just making sure we start off on the right foot so we’re laying down the law a little bit but he is seriously so smart, if he does something he shouldn’t, he’s smart enough not to do it again. He just loves being around us, but he’s surprisingly good on his own too. He’s so loveable it’s completely impossible not to spoil him just a little bit. Sorry, I’m just completely gooey about him. He has such a sweet nature -really. I’m so delighted he’s with us.
Anyway, I’ll post a couple of pics – how do you do that? Can you just paste them into a post?
Rachel, thanks so much for that little note and approving us!! And Amirah, thanks for taking such good care of him. He’s grand at night actually. We’ve discovered the cunning trick of night time toys. He loves them, we leave them with him during the night and then take them back in the morning. They seem to distract him from our absence!
Also, thanks Gwen. Steve was overawed by the whole giving up your saturday to go microchipping dogs thing – as am I.Anyhow, I’ll figure out the photo thing and post a couple. I’ll also hopefully be in touch again about another matter altogether!

grainneMemberGeorge is sitting on the couch having a bit of a snooze as I type. He seems to be settling in well. It’s early days yet but last night went well. We brought him for a really long walk to tire him out and he slept well downstairs, only whining when he heard us stirring upstairs the following morning. He loves company! I think he just needs to be reassured that if we leave him, we’ll come back. So far so good. Hopefully all will continue along the same lines. Wish us luck!
I’ll update in a few days. Thanks for taking such good care of him. We’re delighted. -
