Hi Catherine.
When Elly came to live with us – that is, Yasser and me – he was very quiet, almost shut down, and he was really withdrawn and timid for the first week or so which gave Yasser the chance to adjust to the situation and to check him out. Yasser established himself as the boss and would box Elly round the ears when he got boisterous (almost never used his claws though) and Elly just took it in good sport. All I did really was to gently tell Elly no for the first while if he was getting a bit over excited around Yasser and now they are the best of pals. Yasser didn’t have a problem adapting when I introduced Ginger last year either. He just sussed out the situation, gave Ginger the evils when she would get too close and now she mostly leaves him alone although Yasser would quite like to be friends with her. I guess it all depends on the type of dog you go for. Obviously it will be a rescue but some dogs are known to be better with cats and your cat, once he knows that he is still boss (feed him first etc) will adjust fine. Yasser was seven by the way when I got Elly. I would say go for it. Lots of terrific dogs out there needing a good loving home and you’ll find the one for you and your cat with a little help from DID. Best of luck with it and let us know how you get on.BerMemberHello all you good DID people!!
Well, its been three years today since my Mammy adopted me from DID and I have to say, its been the best three years ever! I have a great life here in Ennis and I’ve, like, totally gone native and speak like a total bogger now and I’m into the GAA and everything. But the big news from me since I was talkin’ to yiz last is that I have a new sister!!! Yep, the Ma took the great leap forward last July and adopted another dog. Not through DID this time, although she had been agonising over it for ages, looking at your site every day. This time she took ‘direct action’ and got a Ruby Cav called Ginger out of a bad bad situation. Money changed hands (was demanded by the low lifes who were neglecting and abusing Ginge) and for a few weeks the Mam was menaced by them until they buggered off and we all settled down to life together. It took me a while to get used to having a sister. Up till then it was just Mam, Yasser Aracat and me, but I’ve gotten used to her now. Mind you, the wimmin will always be a mystery to me!! She is grand though, apart from the fact that she snores for Ireland, and we do have the craic together. I’m goin’ to try to add a few photos of us but I didn’t have much luck the last time so paws crossed.
Anyway, just wanted to check in with yiz all and to say thanks again for the work you do. If it wasn’t for you Dog knows where I would have ended up. Dead probably.
All the best for now.
Love from Eliot, (Elly, as the Ma calls me. Yuck. People think Im a girl!) Ginger, Yasser and the Ma.

Its been two years since Mammy adopted me from you after I was fostered by Aunty Suzanne who took such great care of me and got me back to health. Its been a great couple of years and I’m very happy living here in Ennis. I have lots of friends that I meet in the woods every day on our walkies and of course, Yasser Aracat is still my best bro.
Just wanted to check in with you all and to put up some new photos of me. And thanks very much again everyone for all you did for me and for all the other doggies.Talk soon.
Love from Eliot.

IMG_0111.jpgBerMemberHi there.
So glad this beautiful little girl has found such a loving home and with a great brother to keep her on her toes.
On what you were saying about you Levi’s breathing, I had the same experience just over a week ago with my boy Eliot (another DID graduate and a Shih Tzu and a bit.). He woke me up in the middle of the night heaving for air – a bit like an asthma attack and frightened the life out of me too. It lasted a few seconds, which felt like hours and then happened again next morning and at lunchtime. I brought him to the vet who said it was bronchitis and he is now on antibiotics for it. He is a little bit wheezy every now and again still but is in good form otherwise.
Obviously this is something that is doing the rounds in the doggy world.Anyway, best of luck with the new arrival and hope you all have a long and very happy life together.
All the best,
Ber.BerMemberHello all from the west of Ireland.
Its been just over a year (18 April 2010) since my Mammy adopted me through DID and what a year its been!
I’m lovin’ it here in Ennis and have a really nice life and lots of friends – my best friend being my step brother Yasser Aracat who is great craic – most of the time.I love my walks every day in the woods where I meet lots of nice (and one or two not so nice!!) dogs and where Mammy now lets me off the lead as I am a good boy and don’t leg it too often.
I’m attaching a few photos taken yesterday of me out in the woods. My hair is a bit long at the moment but I’ll be going to Deirdre in Peter Barks for a cut soon (so Mammy tells me – UGH!!).
A big Hi especially to Suzanne, my foster Mammy who took such good care of me when I was really down and out before crossing the country to Co. Clare.
And thanks everyone in DID for rescueing me and for taking care of all the dogs who have no one to love them.
All the best,
Eliot, Yasser and Ber.

IMG_0024.jpgBerMemberHi everyone. Eliot here.
Just wanted to say hello and to let you know how I’m getting on living in my new home in Ennis. Lovin’ it here in the Banner county, although I’m not much of a GAA man myself. More into the footie as you can see from the photos I’ve sent of me in my new Barcelona strip. I only wear it on match days as I think its naff to wear it any other time. Had a bit of a fright though last Wednesday, Champions League night, when I wore the colours while out for my evening walk in the woods and a demented Real Madrid supporting pug hooligan called Coco went for me – unprovoked – and tried to kick the lard out of me. Well – shocked or what? I wasn’t hurt and didn’t retaliate and the pug’s Mammy was mortified but my Mam said it was ok, no harm done.
Other than that life is good and I’m a happy boy. I’m sending on a photo also of me and my best bud Yasser Aracat having a nosey out the window checking out the neighbours. All the best from me, Ber and Yasser.

Elly and Yasser.jpgBerMemberEliot (formerly Dewey) has been with me now for four months and I thought I should send a few new photos of the little man. He is doing great and is happy with his new life in Ennis and his best mate (most of the time!) Yasser Aracat. Loves his walks in the woods and meeting his doggie pals. Not so happy walking near traffic and pedestrians but hopefully we will get that sorted eventually.
He has changed so much, from the timid, quiet little guy that I took home on the 18th of April. He is now bolshie, demanding, funny, naughty, cute as a button, heedless, lovable, loud – and thats just in the first half hour of the day!
Thanks again all at DID for letting me adopt him. Trying to talk myself out of adopting another as a companion for him but may eventually fail.
All the best.
Ber, Eliot and Yasser.

Ber, Eliot and Yasser.BerMemberMaking a final attempt to load some photos of Eliot. Most were taken almost a month ago and he has come on so much since then. His coat is much longer and he has seriously filled out. Chunky boy now. Its very hard to get pics of him as he just bounds over to you as soon as you look at him.
IMG_0091.jpgBerMemberHello all.
Just a quick update on Eliot and an attempt to upload photos at last, using the new system.
Eliot has been with me for 5 weeks now and is a total joy. He is completely settled and happy and having fun every day. Loves his walks and meeting other dogs which he is generally fine with – just the odd grrrrs for a particular black Scottie that we meet, and I’m sure its the Scotties fault, not my little man’s!! He is still very shy with strangers and barks at visitors to the house, but hopefully the training that we are going for in a couple of weeks will sort that out – or teach me how to handle it.
His hair is now thick and lush and he is going to the beauty parlour this Friday to have a little trim, particularly on his (usually dirty) face and bum. He is such a boy – always into the muck and he looks like a ruffian most of the time – just can’t keep his face clean.
He and my cat Yasser are getting on great really. Yasser gets a bit bent out of shape when Elly is being too giddy and will give him a clip round the ear to sort him out, but its amazing, he no longer uses his claws, just dooks him with the closed paw. Result! Its such a relief to me that Yasser was able to handle having a dog in the house.
The only down side with Ells is that he snores like an ould fella and had me awake half the night last night with his snores and grunts and grizzles and dreams of scrapping black Scotties. Of course, this wouldn’t be a problem if I didn’t have him in the bed with me. My fault.
So all in all its been the best decision that I’ve made in a long time – adopting this little bundle of love. He is just so good for me and has changed my very sedentary life. No more lolling on the couch watching the box in the evenings. Its out for long walks or playing with the rascal in the garden.
Thanks so much again to DID for allowing me to adopt him.
All the best,
Ber, Eliot and Yasser.BerMemberHello all.
Finally getting round to letting you know how Dewey – forever to be called Eliot – is getting on in his new home. I collected him from his brilliant foster Mam Suzanne on Sunday the 18th of April and took him back to his new life in Ennis and he has settled in really well and seems to be completely happy. He and I bonded immediately and it is going much better than I expected with him and Yasser Aracat, although I’m not sure they will ever curl up in the same bed together!!
Eliot is just the most wonderful little dog and I have to say my life has been transformed by him. I took all of last week off to settle him in and we spent it in the garden playing, going for walkies a couple of times a day and we hit a few beaches which he loved. (I’ve walked more since he arrived than I have in the past year!) I returned to work yesterday and was so stricken by separation anxiety that I had to take the afternoon off. What am I like?
I can’t thank DID enough for letting me adopt Eliot and a huge thanks also to Suzanne and John for taking such good care of him and for bringing him back to health.
I’ll figure out how to upload photos and will send some on soon.
Till then, all the best from the west.Ber, Elly and Yasser.
BerMemberDewey – now officially to be called Elliott (although I might spell it Eliot – just to give him literary pretensions!!) will be coming home with me on Sunday and I am totally excited by the prospect. Anxious too as I know how attached he has become to Suzanne, John, Boo, Max and Minnie.
I just want to say how grateful I am to Suzanne for the fantastic job she has done in bringing Eliot back to health and for keeping in touch with me about his progress and his likes and dislikes. A huge thanks also to everyone at DID for giving me the opportunity to adopt this gorgeous little guy. I hope he will be as happy with me and Yasser (Aracat) as he has been with Suzanne and her family.
I am taking next week off work to settle him in so it will probably be the week after next before I get the chance to send an update and photos on how he is enjoying life in County Clare.
Thanks again to all you great animal lovers for the work you do in saving all these dogs.
I will post an updateBerMemberHi.
I’ve just applied to DID to adopt a dog and had my home visit yesterday – waiting to hear the outcome of that. I’ve been following the progress of Dewey/Elliot and have fallen in love with the little guy and would be very interested in becoming his Mam if I am approved to adopt. He seems to be a gentle little guy and ok with cats which is a must for me as I have a very nervy/highly strung/neurotic/spoiled cat called Yasser. If you have a chance I’d be grateful if you could let me know a bit more about his personality, particularly in relation to cats.
Thanks a lot and good on you for the great job you’ve been doing with the little man.
Ber.
