How to Help Your Rescue Dog Settle Into Their New Home

Bringing a rescue dog home is an exciting milestone, but it’s also the beginning of a big adjustment for your new companion. Everything is unfamiliar, from the sights and sounds of your home to the people they’ll now spend their days with.

The good news is that, with patience, understanding and a consistent routine, most rescue dogs settle in beautifully.

Give Them Time to Adjust

Every dog adapts at their own pace. Some may feel comfortable within a few days, while others need several weeks or even months to build confidence.

Avoid overwhelming your dog with too many new experiences during the first few days. Give them time to explore their new surroundings at their own pace.

Create a Safe Space

Set up a quiet area where your dog can rest without being disturbed. A comfortable bed, fresh water and a few toys can help them feel safe and secure.

Having somewhere they can retreat to when they need a break is especially important during the early days.

Establish a Routine

Dogs thrive on consistency.

Try to feed, walk and let your dog out at roughly the same times each day. A predictable routine helps reduce stress and allows your dog to understand what to expect.

Take Things Slowly

Introduce new people, places and experiences gradually.

While it’s tempting to show your new dog off to friends and family straight away, giving them time to settle first will help build confidence.

Use Positive Reinforcement

Reward the behaviours you’d like to encourage using praise, treats or toys.

Positive reinforcement helps strengthen your bond while building trust and confidence.

Be Patient

Some rescue dogs may arrive with little confidence or past experiences that make certain situations challenging.

Progress isn’t always linear. Celebrate the small wins and remember that every positive experience helps your dog feel more secure.

When to Ask for Advice

If you’re unsure about your dog’s behaviour or need guidance during the settling-in period, don’t hesitate to reach out to the Dogs in Distress team. We’re here to support both you and your new companion.

A Lifetime of Friendship Starts Here

Watching a rescue dog relax, gain confidence and become part of your family is one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll ever have.

With time, patience and plenty of love, your new companion will soon feel right at home.
