For over 20 years, Dogs in Distress has been rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming abandoned and unwanted dogs across Ireland — giving every one of them a second chance at life.
Dogs in Distress began over 20 years ago when our founder, Marie Hannon, visited a Dublin pound and saw countless healthy, loving dogs with no chance of survival. With just a digital camera and determination, she began photographing the dogs, naming them, and sharing their stories online — giving them visibility and hope.
What started as a small effort soon grew into a nationwide rescue network. Offers of help began pouring in, and Dogs in Distress was born — built on compassion, community, and the belief that every dog deserves love and safety.

We lost our lab early this year and when we decided to look for a rescue we came across dogs in distress. Right from the start they were so easy to work with, very diligent but very open and available for any questions we had. We came across beau and when we realised he was the dog for us they worked with us for close to a month between home visits and family visits to meet beau to make sure everything was perfect. He obviously had been very well looked after and made the transition to our family very easy. There was several follow up calls to make sure everything was going great and we honestly could g of been happier with everyone involved. If you’re looking for someone new for your family these are the guys to go with!Posted on Hayley Austin2025-10-17Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We adopted our wonderful xl bully from dogs in distress just before ban came in September 2024. We had many phone conversations explaining and discussing my current dogs and how best to welcome Ted into our human and canine family. He was an incredible addition and is much adored. We still keep in touch with Dogs in distress with updates on Ted. Highly recommendPosted on Hes L2025-10-04Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We initially fostered Gigi from Dog in Distress in July but within a week we adopted her. From the home check to checking in to see how Gigi is settling in, DID have been really supportive. Gigi has brought so much to joy to our house. She might be a hoover and hates getting woken up but we love her to bits, even with the constant shedding 😆 She’s turned from a city girl into a county girl who loves walks in the woods, Wexford strawberries and Wexford ice cream ! Thank you Dogs in Distress for bringing this crazy fur potato into our lives! 🐾💛Posted on katie spain2025-09-24Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We adopted our puppy Daphne from dogs in distress earlier this year, they were so considerate and genuinely interested in making sure we had the right match for us, our lifestyle and our existing dog, the process went smoothly and quickly and didn’t just end when we collected her, they love receiving updates on how she’s doing and adore when we send photos ! They regularly check in to make sure she is getting on well and are always on hand if we have any questions or need advice, we couldn’t fault them !Posted on Bi Na2025-09-19Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I have fostered plenty of dogs with Dogs In Distress and can only recommend them to others espcially since they don't have a physical shelter and rely on their foster families. They have been supportive throughout the whole process which wasn't always easy with my girl that didn't like to share her home sometimes :D They support with transport, food, toys.. basically everything that's needed and they are respectful of your time and efforts too. Thanks for all the work you do DID!Posted on Adena Momple2025-09-16Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We got our second rescue dog, Millie, from Dogs in Distress, and they are wonderful in every way! We love that the dogs they rescue get to stay in a happy foster home until they get adopted. They do such incredible work, a big thanks to them all, especially Natasha ♥Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
