    hi everyone,

We’ve had ruby (amirah) the yorkie in fostering with us for about a week now. we are in love with her and we’re going to keep her…there’s no way i could see her go! she seems to be great with little kids and people in general, really sweet natured and loving, but every time she sees another dog she growls, barks and basically goes mental. she’s not neutered or vaxed yet because she has kennel cough, so we’re not letting her too close to other dogs, but once she’s all set with the vet stuff, where would be a good place to bring her for a bit of socializing? is there a good dog park in dublin? im just worried that she’ll snap at another dog and end up getting hurt…she’s only tiny herself. i dont have any friends who have dogs so i don’t have anywhere to test her out with a dog that i know won’t bite back if she gets a bit rough. any ideas??

    thanks!

A dog park might be too much for her as you won’t have any control over the other dogs and their interactions and you won’t know their personality with her and if she snaps at a dog they may bite back and she’d be worse than when she started.

What about starting her off in training classes to build her confidence and start to teach her things like LOOK, Recall and LEAVE IT and start to socialise her in a controlled enviroment and to help you understand what you need to do.

Or another solution maybe getting her assessed for daycare where her interactions will be controlled to help build her confidence at her pace :D

The dog class sounds like a good plan.

If there is none around I would make sure that she first of all settles in nicely with you, that will take a few weeks/month.

For walkies you could use a 15 or 10 Meter lead she can drag behind her, instead of having her on the leash you can at any time step on the end of the lead to get her back if she does not listen.
What that has to do with the barking and so on? Dogs on a lead behave different then off lead. The drag-lead will giver her freedom to sniff around without the lead feeling.
This usualy helps with agression towards other dogs.

On the lead, I have to say my little terrier is the same as yours, barking at everything, from snowman to great dane. But he is absolut different without it. He wags his tail and sees if there is a play in it.

    Good luck!!

I was going to mention the DSPCA too, although I’ve never been either, they have specific classes for socialisation, so it’s a more controlled environment. We’re thinking of bringing Ollie to a class too. He’s pretty good overall with discipline, so it’s really to teach us how to be better with him and more stict.

Just got Ollie booked in for training classes with the DSPCA on Sunday morning (8.45 start :o ) so will let you know how we get on. I believe the Colgan family will be there with their lot too, so we can give a good review between us!

We are super soft with Ollie, he’s a great boy, and small, and we let him climb all over us. He loves to hop up on your lap and stand with his paws on your shoulders to give kisses, we think its super cute  but it seems not everyone like it, oops!

I brought my chap to training classes with an amazing woman. She uses the basis of praise when they do something right and word association – for example every time my lad came into the kitchen from the garden regardless of if I called him or not I used the word kitchen and before I even noticed it he will now come into the kitchen with one command. Great classes and not too pricey she can also come to your house if you want any specific training advice. I am starting again this Sunday with my new girly and cant wait. Not sure on the rules about recommending people on the forum but if anyone wants her details please PM me and I can pass them on.

She competes in obidence classes with her own dogs and they are all dotes. Just found her to be a very positive person with an approach that I liked as it is all about communicating with your dog and the classes are great fun for puppy and owner!

well i think i judged ruby’s social skills too soon. we went for a long walk along the coast in clontarf today and she was brilliant. she was very friendly to all the dogs we met and there was no growling at all! i still think the classes are a good idea, but at least she doesn’t hate other doggies :D

Well that’s good anyway, at least you know the classes are available if the problem should arise!

She might have heard, that she is going to scool on Sunday morning instead of roling under the blanket once more if she is not a superlovely to everyone and decided better to be . lol

Haha, and it’s not just a Sunday morning, but a Sunday morning on the side of a bloody freezing cold mountain!

The class was good, but Ollie was not! The teacher asked everyone to get the dogs to sit and give them their attention. I looked around and all the dogs were obediently staring up at their owners, while Ollie was doing everything in his power to ignore me and escape to play with the other doggies  . We’ll do better next week!

    All the dogs Jenny?
Although our two were good they wouldn’t give us their attention 100% of the time because they kept trying to get over to eachother!
    Ah Ollie was grand!!
But yes, I’m sure he will be better next week! ;)
Might see you there , if we were put in the same session
