Thanks Audrey. I rang Dabs’s vet this morning. He will have an excision of the lump on Monday morning, then the pathology can be checked. As usual, Dabs’ vet is very calm and positive. He will aim to get a good clear margin. Dabs loves going to the vet and assumed he was going this morning and glued himself to the front door making it a bit tricky for me to escape to work.

Poor Jet. Dabs had mange when he was a pup and his nose was a bit pink and bare requiring sunscreen for a good while. I hope Jet gets well soon.

Some Valentines and Dabs’ birthday cake/chicken photos. Brandon is doing his Tellington Touch course on Sunday…looking forward to that. Dabs had a biopsy and he will need a tumour excision soon…NOT looking forward to that…a bit of a worry really seeing it was just last August since the poor soul had major Spinal surgery for a degenerated disk. He’s a tough cookie though but he could do with a few prayers as he is a query sarcoma based on his fine needle biopsy.

My thoughts are with you. You gave him 4 years of living a full life. I really enjoyed Harley’s updates and fun filled photos.

Tonight, 4 years ago I couldn’t bear any longer to ignore. I saw a dog posted on here in Urgent Action Required who had been found by the dog warden in Ballymun and who’s time up had passed on the 25th of January. Tomorrow, 4 years ago…myself, my dad and my other dog would go to Ashton Pound to meet this dog. Kathy knew I was interested in fostering as I was someone on begging to foster a puppy a few weeks earlier (we both knew I hadn’t a clue about the work involved with puppies and Kathy, always direct, said as much). Kathy advised me to go meet this 2-3 year old dog. As those of you on here a while know, when time was up in Ashton Pound…it was up!

We went into the kennel and asked about this dog that the pound named Brandon. I remained inside with one of the staff who passed on some food from Dogs in Distress. Meanwhile my dad went out to the cold wet yard where the larger dogs seemed to be kept. My dad tried desperately not to look to either side of him as he couldn’t bear to see the dogs at either side also hoping to leave that place. My dad told me that Brandon was too small to see above the door of the kennel so was standing on his hind legs. The noise was incredible…Brandon licked my dad’s hand through the bars.

Brandon was wild. I took him for a walk in the mucky grounds of Ashton Pound. He knew the route..he didn’t bother to look up. We tried several times to get him in the car. When we did get him in one of the staff took his lead and put its end through the rear window on the driver side of my dad’s car and closed it to keep him from running off again.

When we go a bit down the road we pulled into a petrol station on the way to the M50 and released his lead. Brandon, filthy and highly anxious, managed to walk along every surface of the interior, including the ceiling.

We only meant to foster him…my dad said no way was any dog coming in to this house going to leave again…this is his Forever Home!

In life there are some moments you just don’t forget…they stay with you and change how you view the world. I never take my dogs for granted knowing what I saw in that pound on that day and thinking what would have become of Brandon.

In 2010 Fingal and Dublin City (Ashton Pound), there were respectively 206 and 87 dogs killed! Every day I’m thankful that my family member, Brandon, was not one of them!

Here’s to all of our companions who made it out and changed our lives forever!

Thanks Audrey, they are both in great form. Dabs and Brandon are back to dragging me around trees at full force? Dabs doesn’t realise he has to pace himself and Brandon really doesn’t mind dabs pulling us in random directions :D

Dabs is eating well, Brandon arrives along to double check on progress. Thanks for all the good wishes. Dabs had a checkup by his lovely vet, John, in Sandymount Pet Hospital on Thursday. He has some reflexes in his rear legs. He will see him again in just over a week, he was happy to see Dabs walking so soon post his surgery. He will be looking at hydrotherapy for him, how exciting as Dabs loves swimming.

Brandon is being super and only once growled at Dabs initially when he was himself feeling very tired. He has great patience with Dabs Nd realises he has to wait. He gave me super snuggles last night and we watched the Godfather together.

Dabs had a bad late evening yesterday but calmed down with a mild sedative and the sound of John the vet on speaker phone (no joking, he recognised him and came over to the phone, sat down and had his meds). Both myself and my back are delighted that his new harness arrived today. He (and patient brother Brandon) survived the numerous strap adjustments to give us a comfy supported dog who could safely urinate without his rear legs collapsing. He’s the best 11 year old collie. Thanks for the good wishes Indianna and Audrey.

Brandon’s big brother had a bit of bother on Friday and following an urgent MRI it was discovered he had a disc protrusion. He had his surgery on Yesterday and has an 85% chance of making a complete recovery. Already he is using his hind legs.

His little brother Brandon, has been so good. He sneaked into bed with Dabs this morning. Apart from that he is giving Dabs plenty of space and they seem to have come to an understanding. This is brilliant and mature of Brandon as he usually would muscle in on Dabs to try and finish off his food so we are super proud of him.
