"This is just an update on a dog that we adopted 2 years ago so I don’t
know if I’m emailing the right person.
We adopted Shiloh 2 years ago. The story we were told was that she had been thrown off a bridge and landed in a field that she couldn’t
escape from and was given scraps of food and water by some people that worked in a local factory for a period of four months before someone reported her and she ended up in the pound.
When we got her she was very thin, her teeth were terrible and her
hair was matted and discoloured, she had no hair on the end of her
tail and she just looked dreadful. My wife picked her up at the pound
and she was very anxious on the drive to our home. When she arrived
she had to deal with meeting me and two other German Shepherds who both wanted her out of their garden. Although the two dogs were doing
all the barking and showing aggression she seemed more wary of me than
them. She barked at me if I tried to approach but I could see it was
fear rather than aggression. I got her on a leash and took her for a
walk around the garden to calm her down and after that things started
to improve.
Over the following weeks it took a big effort to cope with her
behaviour, she was very clingy and was at our side everywhere we went.
She didn’t seem to understand what "play" was, and wrestling
with the other dogs or fetching a ball were completely alien to her.
On one occasion when she was off the leash on Gormanstown beach and it
was getting dark and time to go home she decided she wasn’t coming and
kept running away, only some very soft coaxing got her close enough
for me to grab her and get a leash on her, if it had taken longer and
she had run it would have been too dark to find her. She was very
skittish and unpredictable for a few months
Anyway now things are completely different. Her weight is now normal
and her coat is beautiful. She likes nothing better than playing
fetch, walking and swimming at the beach. She is still quite clingy
though much better than she was, she still doesn’t like strange men,
and hates fires and fireworks. She is very settled though and likes
nothing better than sitting with us in the evening. She is a great
watchdog as well as being a big pet. She is ok with the other dogs
although they have had to put her in her place once or twice. So
overall she is a happy dog getting well looked after.
Here’s a picture of her with her two companions Kim and Jess, she’s
the one with the plastic chop in her mouth. All our dogs are rescues and we would recommend to anyone thinking of
getting a dog that they should go down this road. Not only are you
getting a dog but you’re also possibly saving a dogs life.
Happy Christmas to all at Dogs In Distress, keep up the good work."December 29, 2009 at 6:56 pm #92018IndiannaMemberWhat a lovely end to a sorry tail. Great photo and I couldn’t agree more that people should take on a pound hound, they make truly great ‘friends’.
