Audrey, you have the patience of a saint and the heart of a lion. Who cares HOW you managed to get in to see Velvet. The practice have let you down and it is their fault that you had to resort to less than honest tactics to visit your dog. It would take a nurse or receptionist 2 minutes to call you on a daily basis with feedback from the vet(s), even just to say there is no change from the previous day. If they resent the cost of calling you, give you a time to call them for up-dates but they should certainly call you immediately if there is any deterioration in Velvet’s condition. On a positive note for the practice, I am happy they had the things you left with Velvet in beside her. I hope they will allow you in for a few minutes each day just to let Velvet know you are there and take her in a bit of freshly cooked chicken, fish or whatever takes her fancy. Doctors, vets and nurses can do their job perfectly well but there is nothing like having family support. You are the one who will go the extra mile and have the knowledge to know what Velvet likes and most importantly – you are the one she trusts. I am still extremely worried about her but your up-date has chipped a tiny bit of that worry away. I and all the other people who are blogging are with you and Velvet in spirit, storming, storming, storming.

Audrey, I am just so delighted that you got in to see Velvet. :D :D :D We’ve all been floored with a virus in our house this week and haven’t been able to get out bed – all our efforts have been concentrated on praying for Velvet and logging on periodically to check for news!

Although she is still so sick, it’s great to hear from the person who knows and loves her best and to know that she managed to eat her steak is hugely encouraging.

Along with all Velvet’s supporters, we’ll continue with the "storming" for as long as it takes.

Got an update call from her second surgeon today and she had a comfortable night and she managed to stand up and got out for a wee this morning ate a little but she did have to be muzzled as she had went for her nurse out of fear this morning when they tried to give her a pain relief injection. But as the surgeon said that is good (well not for the poor nurse) because she is becoming more aware of her condition and is willing to protect herself. He is now in total agreement that she is a very scared little thing and his weekend report will be that as soon as is medically possible that she should come home and let her relax and get well again…

Oh Velvet, we must not bite the people who are trying to help us but it is totally understandable. Poor you :( , so very uncomfortable, needing injections, help with drips and getting help to walk etc, etc. Lots of handling by strangers for a very sore and frightened little dog :? . The faster you get home the better. It will be back to scratch I imagine but you will settle again very soon. Your great foster mother understands everything and will take such good care of you ;) . I can’t wait to read that you are home, although I imagine it will take you quite a while to get back on your paws but there is no rush.

Next time you see her tell her Furby and Harley are storming for her too x

I was away since yesterday and was dreading asking about Velvet in case the news wasn’t good but SO RELIEVED this evening to hear that there has been even a tiny improvement. :D Your visit, Audrey, will have made a huge difference to her recovery and please God she will go from strength to strength now. It is hard to imagine what the poor baby has endured during the past week but she has kept strong in spite of incredible adversity. Everything still crossed for you, Audrey, and for Velvet who does not deserve the awful experience she has had!! All best wishes from us here. :D :D :D

Hello I haven’t posted before but have been following DID for a very long time ever since we got Henry (Zucco) over a year ago. I know how bad you must be feeling with little Velvet as I went through terrible traumas with my previous little girlie who was 17 when she left us. Just to say that prayers and thoughts are being sent from the South East and the fact that Velvet ate some food you brought is a really good sign. I used to take in special cottage pie everytime I went to visit and it did make me feel that i was doing something. So I look forward to reading updates every day, I am sure that things will turn out alright eventually and Velvet will be back safely in her own loving home. :)

Sorry for not posting sooner but its been an emotional and hectic 24hrs.

Yesterday I had a visit with the miracle maker Velvet. I was bowled over that she actually walked out to the foyer to me and immediately recognised me before I even said anything. She was so excited…..we went to a consulting room where we cuddled on the floor for the next half hour. When I was leaving I was walking on air.

Then about 6pm I got a call asking me to come down and collect her as she had turned aggressive and they couldn’t manage her….they were trying to put on a buster collar (which I had told them not too as it would freak her out as she can’t even put her nose or head into a strange bowl) they couldn’t get even a lead on her and she was turning on everyone. So myself and my pops headed down to collect her. I was impossible to understand just how 5hrs later she was perfectly fine and now she was completely terrified and so scared I didn’t think she even recognised me…..after 45mins of me telling people to leave the room and coaxing and reassuring eventually she got to her feet and then there literally was no stopping her she ran down the corridors and just before we left did a huge poo in the reception (think that was her way of saying thanks).

Anyway I got her into the jeep and she we travelled comfortably home then scared to get out but gently carried her in…she wasn’t to be discharged till the weekend so still not out of the woods but following their every instruction to the letter and hope being home she will concentrate on not being scared (but she is truly traumatised) she wee’d as soon as my pops walked into the room last night….again this afternoon she wee’d and sat in it when the door bell went so we have alot of work ahead of us when she gets back on her little four paws. She is scared of going outside too! But when she is in no pain all of these are surmountable.

Her poor little legs are in a sorry state and she won’t allow even me touch her tail….where she is shaved she is raw and red. Lots of medication and strict rest but she is very uneasy and we are not sleeping she wakes with jumps and darts sometimes she remembers where she is and other times she is very unsure and snarls as she is afraid. She woke at 3am after about an hours snooze then woke again at 5am and there was no consoling her she was so unhappy.

But we are so lucky to have her alive and still with us and hopefully her next post will be delivering some more comforting news.

Please keep all the positive thoughts going and heaven you’re not off the storming hook just yet.

Oh and a big thanks to Helen & Dave of HomeFromHome who as soon as they heard Velvet was home got on the road to collect Rossi and Tess for their holidays to Wexford to give Velvet the rest she needs.

Poor Velvet, she has certainly been through the wars. Her traumatised behaviour reminds me very much of the collie (Keeley) I took on over a year ago (she was ‘institutionalised’ for almost 3 months but without the medical trauma). However, it’s amazing what time and other doggies to show the ropes can achieve. Velvet is in the very best place she can be now and can concentrate on getting well and learning naughty things from Tess and Rossi very soon. ;) Well done foster Mum!
