REF 397. Lucy is a surrendered ShihTzu. She is eleven years old but she is bright, sparky and a sweet little thing. The owner tells us that she is good with older children and friendly towards other dogs. She enjoys her comfort and loves attention.
As a surrender she was in danger of being put to sleep.
shi.jpgAs I write this, Lucy is curled up asleep on the sofa next to me. I collected this little lady today and when I opened the car door she just hopped in and settled down. She is great in the car. I can only describe her as a little angel on four legs. She has the most beautiful temperament, very placid and easy going. When she came into the house she had a good look around both inside and out and settled straight away. I decided to give her a bath – it was effortless. She just stood still and took it all in her stride. She’s the first dog to come into the house that Ollie has completely ignored and also is not in the least bit jealous of her. I had to leave them for about 2 hours this afternoon and usually I would put a foster in the kitchen while Ollie would stay in the sitting room on his perch (back of sofa). Not so today. Lucy just made herself comfy on the sofa and the two went off to sleep. She is totally house trained. I took her for a walk this evening and no surprise she was great on the lead. All in all this is one beautiful little dog.
Lucy is beautiful and she looks so calm and content. I am so delighted she is safe and cared for. A pound is no place for her, don’t know how anyone could give her up. She has landed on four paws anyway
Lady Lucy had a great night. Not a peep out of her. When we were going to bed she was sound asleep on the sofa so I decided to leave her there. When my husband came down at 7.30 this morning she was still asleep.
I came down an hour later to find her still there. I was greeted with a wagging tail and a pep in her step. She had no accidents and after being fed, went outside to do her business . Then she hopped back up on the sofa for another snooze. Obviously she has royal blood as a bed in the kitchen doesn’t seem to be her thing. She’d much rather the comfort of a sofa.
I also discovered she is happy to see children as two neighbours children called to see her and her tail never stopped wagging.
I don’t know how she ended up in the pound She certainly didn’t deserve that. Anyway she’s safe now in the hands of DID and will get the home she truly deserves.That’s really wonderful news thank you for giving her a loving foster home. I’m sure there is a new forever mammy or daddy somewhere out there
Delighted for this lovely little lady landing on her paws with Ollie and Mary and Ciaran……maybe they might join the failed fosterers gang.
After my last update on Saturday, I took Lucy to the park for a walk. After just 5 minutes of walking, she collapsed and her breathing became very shallow. Fortunately, I had seen it happen before to my last dog and I guessed it was her heart that had caused it. She lay on her side for about 20 seconds but after that sat up and started to breath normally. I sat with her for another 5 minutes after which she just got up and walked away as if nothing had happened. I had also noticed the night before that she had a swelling on her right hand side. For the rest of the weekend she was in great form and even walked on Sunday for about 20 minutes with no trouble at all. It was felt best to bring her to Terenure Veterinary Clinic today and she is being kept in overnight. It was discovered that she has a slight heart murmur and is being given a heart tablet which should rectify the problem. The swelling on her right side would appear to be a fatty deposit but a sample is being taken just to be on the safe side. She is in good form and is eating and drinking well. She certainly didn’t have any adverse reaction to her "episode" and in fact when my husband came down this morning, he found her asleep on the kitchen table
I had left a chair out from the table as she likes to go under the table and snooze. Little did I think she’d use the chair as a step ladder!! She will more than likely be home again tomorrow and I will update again on her progress. Well it’s all good news for Lucy. She came home today from her trip to the Vets. She’s now on 2 tablets for her heart murmur and is in terrific form. Mark, the vet in Terenure, is very pleased with her. He checked the swelling on her right side and it’s just a fatty lump (well don’t all us girls have them?
) I discovered she LOVES chocolate – maybe that’s the reason for the fatty lump! Needless to say I didn’t give her any (well maybe a teeny weeny bit when no one was looking ) I am very aware that chocolate is not good for dogs so please don’t write in and give out to me! It was a one off I promise She is so laid back and easy going. My daughter and her boyfriend arrived this evening and she greeted them with a wagging tail. She is so friendly to everyone she meets, be they human or dog. I have no idea how she is with cats but judging by her demeanour, I bet she’d be ok with them. Lady Lucy deserves nothing but the best from now on. There’s a lot of life left in this lady yet.This wonderful little lady is going from strength to strength. I still can’t figure out how someone could surrender such a gentle soul to a Pound, but they must have had good reason. She was definitely loved and well looked after because she is so trusting of everyone and doesn’t show any signs of fear or anxiety. Since starting her heart medication she has had no problems walking and is well able to keep up with Ollie. Her hearing isn’t great and she can only hear very loud noises but we’re working on hand signals instead
. You wouldn’t know she was in the house because she is so quiet and undemanding. Once she is fed and walked, she happily hops up on the sofa and goes off to sleep. Then when she gets fed up with the comfort of a sofa, she’ll go in under one of the chairs and happily go off to sleep once again. She would be best suited to a quiet house either as an only dog or with a dog of similar energy. She deserves a second chance and anyone lucky enough to adopt her would get nothing but love in return.DSCF2895.jpgDSCF2889.jpgDoes anyone have any ideas how I can get Lucy to take one of her tablets. It’s a capsule type and I’ve tried wrapping it in cooked ham, but it fell out, parma ham but she still managed to spit it out and I even opened one and put the contents on a piece of ham but no luck
Apart from that she’s doing great and every day she gets happier in herself and more and more confident.Hi – I know this might not sound very loving, but my 14 year old jack russell is on anti-biotics a lot. I gave up losing tablets in food not eaten, or soppy tablets spit out after treat eaten. Now I open her mouth, pop the tablet in, hold her mouth closed with my hand for a few mins and she eventually has to swallow and the tablet goes down. Then there’s loads of praise, rubs and of course a treat. Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. I in no way hurt her and it stops all the mucking about with tablets. Please nobody berate me for this – she’s a healthy little girl and is still with me because she took her meds!
PS I love Lucy – can’t stop looking at her posts. I am sooo tempted but already have 2 doggies. She is adorable – I love the goldie oldies too. You’re doing a great job with her – well done!
I totally agree! I shove tablets into my lot as needed – not as callously as I make it sound here but I could never guarantee it getting into the correct dog otherwise!!!
It absolutely doesn’t hurt – either dog or person – and at least you know it’s gone where it should. Best of luck with little Lucy. She is gorgeous.
