Kennel Cough

Hi,

my poor dog Jess has kennel cough, went into be spayed and about a week later the coughing started so not sure if she picked it up at the vets (who I dont think she will be seeing again ), brought her to another vet who gave her a jab and antibiotics which are finished tomorrow and she is still coughing, will be bringing her back to be rechecked but wanted to see if anyone has had experience of kennel cough lasting longer than 2 weeks, I think also maybe the tube in her throat when she was under may have irritated the inside of her throat, she is still eating as normal, still playing with our other dog but obviously not as much as she starts to cough after running around after a few minutes, have also given her exputex which has helped her a lot, anyone got any ideas, have had other dogs but they never had this at all, anyone got any ideas on it?

She will be going back to the vets but just worried our other dog may pick it up and be nice to have a few tips on managing it.

My boxer developed kennel cough a few days after leaving the pound, it was a really bad cough and he also had really thick green mucus running from his nose, he then passed it on to my mini-schnauzer. They were brought to the vet and the boxer needed a full two courses of anti-biotics and the schnauzer needed three before it cleared up, maybe it was a particularly bad strain as I’ve heard that it usually just goes away by itself. The vet eventually gave me a prescription for the chemist and I had to go and get the schnauzer tablets usually used on people. These finally worked but did upset his stomach so he was given special canned food for a few days..Hope your dog gets better soon. If your dog’s cough doesn’t clear up send me a message and I could ring my vet and ask for the name of the drugs that eventually workeed.

When my dog was being neutered he woke up with the tube still down his throat and bless him got the fright of his life……took a good 6 weeks for him to stop coughing…..I gave him ice cubes to chew on, sometimes a little ice cream, honey on the inside of those hollow bones don’t go overboard on these last two as it will pile on the pounds but hope it helps your fur kid!

We took Johnny Hobo from Ashton pound last year and within 5 days he started coughing. Within two days the thick green mucous appeared. It took 3 doses of antibiotics to clear it up.

We brought Fiona/Cody home from Ashton last month and she also developed kennel cough, however, hers cleared up with the help of some Exputex to soothe her throat and 7 days antibiotics. In Cody’s case, we took her straight to the vet for antibiotics as we were concerned due to her advanced age.

There are many different strains but it WILL clear up eventually.

The kennel cough vaccine treats only one strain of the virus and currrently there are eleven known strains.
Therefore if you vacinate your dog there are still no guarantees.
In healthy adults their own immune system kicks in but with underweight victims it takes longer to sort.
Pups are very vunerable as they are only getting an immume system and can get pneumonia and can be fatal ,as I have experienced in the past sadly.
As with all virus bilding the immune system is the best approach.
Good food, a warm bed and lots of TLC as someone said just like a cold.
