    Hi all,
I’m sooo excited because my boyfriend has finally agreed that we need a second dog :D . We adopted Ollie (aka PJ, a shih-tzu X) from DID last summer and he’s such a sociable little thing I think he needs a friend. After minding a friend’s dog recently Rossa now agrees with me that Ollie loved having another dog around, and because they were both about the same size walking them with one person wasn’t a problem (we’ve also looked after an Airedale and you can’t walk them together on your own  .)

Ollie doesn’t have an aggressive bone in his body, but despite being neutered at 7 months, still likes to hump other dogs. I know this is a behavioural thing, and is a sign of dominance (and very funny when he tries it with a Husky or boxer in the dog park  ). He does it much more with other male dogs.

So to my ultimate question. Should we get a male or female dog :?: , do you think, or does it really matter, is it more dependant on the particular dog and how dominant he/she is likely to be?

    Thanks, Jenny…

Does he hump other dogs that are neutuered or is he only attracted to intact dogs? It can take up to 9 months for testosterone to leave a male after they have been neutered so the humping may subside in time however some dogs are life humpers!

Getting a male or female will depend on your own dog and his feelings towards other dogs and also on the dog you hope to adopt. Some prefer to live in a male/female home others will happily live with other dogs of the same sex! If you keep an eye out on the dogs currently in foster care you can read the foster families reports and get a good idea of the type of home they would be best suited to. If you are interested in a particular dog please ask and we can advise if we think it will be a good match!

Delighted you have decided to get a pal for the little man! Happy searching!
