Hi all, well we got Benny home safely though he did have a bit of a problem staying put on the leather seats in the car, he kept sliding around until he wedged himself between his blanket and Ellens leg! He seemed happy enough when he got to his new home and went exploring around the house and garden but then when he came back into the house he neaded straight for the hall door and sat there. He nipped me a few times when we were trying to put him at ease but eventually (after sitting on the hall floor with him for a while) he came back into the kitchen and started to relax. We even had a game of fetch which he seemed to enjoy! Anyways, he stayed in the kitchen overnight though Anna Marie said he gave a bark once or twice during the night it was nothing serious or prolonged. When I approached him this morning he nipped me again and I had to go through the whole process of sitting on the floor and making friends again. He’s lying beside me now with his head resting on the back of my hand which is making typing difficult but he’s not bothered once he’s comfortable
April 12, 2010 at 10:10 am #96621Andrew33MemberWell we got Benny home safely though he kept sliding around on the car seats til he wedged himself between his blanket and Ellens leg and had a little snooze. He seemed happy enough when he got to his new forever home and had a good wander around in the garden christening all the flower pots and anything else he thought worthy. When we brought him back into the house he made a beeline for the hall door and sat at it and nipped me a couple of times when we tried to put him at ease, eventually (after sitting on the hall floor with him) we coaxed him back into the kitchen and after a while he settled down and we even had a game of fetch ( he threw the toy, I went and got it )
He gave one or two barks tru the night but nothing serious or prolonged. He nipped me again this morning when I went to pet him and I had to sit on the kitchen floor this morning til I regained his trust. now he’s lying beside me with his head resting on the back of my hand which is making typing difficult but Benny doesn’t mind once he’s comfyApril 12, 2010 at 11:17 pm #96669MARYMACMemberLovely to see an update on Benny. The biting thing is something that will stop. I think its a fear thing with him as he did this with us as well. Glad his first night went well and he settled. I spoke to Anna Marie this evening and she assured me all is well with this wee chap. The house was very quiet today and I miss his mischievious little face around the house, but am so glad he is gone to people who will love and care for him so well.him Look forward to lots of updates
Mary.April 13, 2010 at 10:10 am #96682Andrew33MemberBenny’s settling in fine, he has his appointment for tomorrow for his second vacc’s and a check up. He really is a grumpy head first thing in the morning! Reminds me of somebody but I just can’t remember who at the moment , It takes him a good hour to get up out of his bed and acknowledge your presence!
April 13, 2010 at 11:02 pm #96737moscanMemberHi Andrew….
Love the photos, and since we adopted another DID Shih Tzu Simba he too never likes being disturbed either first thing in the morning or for the last walk in the evening… bed time much too valuable.. Its the personality… they rule the house as much as possible… and be careful of your shoes… socks… etc… but do enjoy the love they provide…
Best wishes to Benny and your family…
Mo and Simba
April 14, 2010 at 10:39 am #96772Andrew33MemberThanks Mo,
Benny went for his shots and check up today, not a bother on him being examined by the vet.
Vet said Benny’s in pretty good shape, a little underweight but only by half a kilo or so, his eyes unfortunately have suffered some permanent damage from a condition being left untreated and he’ll require drops or ointment twice per day for the rest of his life. He’s getting quite boisterous and playful now and bounds around the place (when he’s not sleeping of course). Thats all the news for now.April 14, 2010 at 11:12 am #96774MARYMACMemberHi,
Glad benny got on well with the vet. I loved when he decided to get all giddy and he would look around for something to play with and drag around, he is a funny little chap. glad he is settling in well with you.Mary.
April 15, 2010 at 11:40 am #96814Andrew33MemberBenny loves his walks, as soon as you pick up the lead, he’s out of his bed like a shot. Loves travelling in the car too. He’ll sit on the passenger seat with his chin resting on your arm while you’re driving.
Gave him a bath yesterday and he’s scruffy again today cos we walked tru some lovely freshly cut grass this morning which was full of all sorts of interesting smells for Benny to check out so now he has green paws and belly!
April 15, 2010 at 12:47 pm #96818oneillMemberHi Andrew,
I initially had this cheeky chappie for the first 2 weeks or so before Mary kindly took him. He was such a state when I got him. Its just so great to see a dog who was so depressed and frightened and in obvious discomfort, transformed into such a happy little chappy now living in a loving home . A huge WELL DONE to Mary, Gerry (and the beautiful Abby of course!!) who devoted all their time to helping this little fella realise he is actually a dog!! And that he can play, and have a warm bed and that being picked up and cuddled was a good thing. This rascal gave Abby and Mary a run for their money but Mary you must be so proud to see him now, all happy with a loving family . Andrew my favourite little things about this guy is that when he takes a drink his beard dribbles the water afterwards and he leaves a little puddle of water . He also has the funniest little run Ive ever seen, he certainly made me laugh and I know he had Mary in stictches on many an occasion.
Thanks for keeping in touch as I love when I log on and see theres been an update on him. He’s a completely different dog and it just shows what TLC and love and care will do!! Well done to you and your family, he’s lucky to have found such a great home Give him a cuddle from me x
April 15, 2010 at 1:07 pm #96819fayresMemberMmmm…. someone’s definitely made themselves at home here and will be calling the shots before long,if he’s not already doing so Seems to be a match made in heaven though Well done Andrew and gang-he seems to have you all smitten and is looking great
FidelmaApril 16, 2010 at 11:46 am #96888Andrew33MemberThank you all for your comments and interest in Benny. We need to fatten him up a tiny bit, he wasn’t really thriving on the dry food and seemed to be pretty bored with it even though we mixed tuna or mashed potato into it, he’d eat it but you just knew he wasn’t enjoying it so yesterday I boiled him a couple of chicken thighs (free range), stripped of all the lean meat and did mashed potato, carrots and broccoli for him, I put it in his bowl and really didn’t know if he’d go for it or not. He licked the bowl clean! His eyes are getting less cloudy (well I think so anyway) but still a lot of discharge which is very difficult to clean away from his fur. I think I might take him back to the vets early next week just for another check up and he’ll be seeing a groomer in the very near future too if anybody would like to recommend one in sth Dublin?
