When: Friday, May 16, 12noon sharp to 2pm
Where: The Upper Courtyard entrance of Dublin Castle (Directly opposite Queen of Tarts on Dame Street)Dogs in Distress attended a peaceful march in August 2012 hosted by Animal Rights Action Network. In the meantime what has changed? The Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013 was written into Irish legislation. However, puppy mills operate, the greyhound industry, heavily funded by the taxpayer results in pounds notably the one in Co Clare having hundreds of greyhounds put to sleep annually (http://www.environ.ie) and many rescues in Ireland will be under pressure to get dogs out of the pounds to save them from the tight time frames of 5 days for strays and but a day for surrenders. We also saw attempts by our Government to send greyhounds and racehorses to China. Bang in the early 80’s as a child I recall seeing cattle loaded on cargo ships in Waterford port. As I child I remember being upset by the noise the distresses livestock made and asking why this was happening. This was live export to the a Middle East where the cattle could be killed in a Halal manner I was told. Happily this stopped, however, only to be resumed again post our new legislation!
On Friday May 16, Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney is holding an ‘Animal Welfare Conference’ for organisations involved with animal care. ARAN is looking for support. Here’s something from their Facebook page.
Considering that this is the first conference of its kind and most possibly the last for a long time, various groups will be turning up outside of Dublin Castle on Friday May 16 to protest about various issues facing animals. On the day, ARAN and Compassion in World Farming (CIWF) will stage a lively, peaceful demonstration to protest the awful trade of live exports – sending Irish cows outside of the EU to Libya where there is little or no guidelines to "protect animals". We should have roughly up to 150 supporters for the first hour before moving off at roughly 1.20pm to march on the streets to Dail Eireann for the final forty five minutes to push the message home that whilst we welcome the new Act, it does nothing to protect animals in the bigger picture. After the rally we will be having food and drinks for anyone who’d like to come along. (this is completely optional).[/quote:1f47oitb]

Compassion in World Farming is supporting ARAN (Animal Rights Action Network) in this campaign and will also attend on the day. Nothing has really changed for animals and this is a great opportunity to hit our message home. It will probably be a very long time before we get this opportunity again.
There will be posters, banners and flyers distributed and it will be a very enjoyable productive day.
