Ref 440. Scruffy. Male. Old. English Sheepdog. 9-10 years. Scruffy was found straying in Bathe Abbey Duleek. This gentle soul has a wise nature and although quiet, cuddled up to me as I pet him and kept his eyes on his surroundings. He is very matted and keeps a slow steady pace when walking but he is a lovely natured guy.

If you can help this boy directly, contact Meath County Council’s Dog Sanctuary – Blackhall Boarding Kennels, Summerhill Road, Blackhall, Dunboyne, Co Meath. Tel: 01 802 6676.

Please, if you have any spare time could you print off half a dozen posters and put them up in the area he was found. Please, this may help to reunite him with his family. We just cannot cope with the amount of dogs and it would be great to see some of these dogs going home.

I heard somebody with a younger dog tried to adopt this dog but the pound refused, they felt he deserved to live his days out as an only dog. If that is the case I hope they will allow him some extra time so his special person can come forward

We took this little man into foster and brought him to be vet checked.

He was actually about 14/15yrs old…no muscles in his back legs…blind in one eye..partially blind in the other eye..deaf…fluid on his lungs and his coat and overall condition were shocking…it would have taken years for him to get into this state..even though he was in this terrible condition he was still a gentle loving soul..

Sadly the decision had to be made to put him to sleep and he has now gone to rainbow bridge…..run free little man :(

So sad he never got to know love and care in his last years, but it’s great that he was pts lovingly and is no longer suffering. RIP little guy.

Sadly the right decision – Scruffy left us with love and compassion.

    Rainbow Bridge welcomes Scruffy home.

You didn’t really know it Scruffy but you had many people pouring love over and around you. Those closest to you cared enough to help you on your way to a better place. You will always be part of the DID family.

How awful to think this poor pet was roaming with all that was wrong with him, God rest you and run free and thanks for taking him out the pound and putting him out of his misery. I wonder what his story was. R.I.P

Shame, shame, shame on his previous owners for treating him the way they did and then discarding him to let him roam alone and unloved. Heartbreaking to think it was years of neglect that left him in such a state. It was the kindest thing for him to be PTS. His suffering is over. Peace at last for him.

I’m so upset to hear this sad news. Poor, dear Scruffy. He was loved by his fosterer in the end, which gives me some small comfort to know.
And yes Indianna – he was one of our family – we all loved him. That’s such a lovely sentiment.

I wish we got to him sooner. But I suppose that’s what DID volunteers do for all the dogs that we do reach in time…this could be the fate of so many other dogs that DID rescues.

In his memory, and the memory of all the other dogs like Scruffy that we have met over the years, we will keep on working.

    Goodbye Mr. Scruffy RIP
Goodbye doesn’t always mean the end, it can also mean a new beginning. For poor old Scruffy it will be a new beginning running free in Rainbow Bridge. I had the absolute privilege to take this beautiful creature out of the Pound the day he was put to sleep. God love him he was in a terrible state; his hair was badly matted, his right eye was completed closed over with infection, his left eye covered in warts. He could barely breathe through his nose and was very unsteady on his feet . As he lay down in the back of the car as we brought him to Kathy – my hubby and I both knew – but we never spoke about it. Scruffy was not going to make it for much longer in this cruel world. But we were happy at least that he wouldn’t die in the Pound – alone, sick, stinking of urine and unloved. He would die in the company of someone who loved him – even though she hardly knew him. When we said our goodbyes and left him in the loving care of Kathy we still never spoke about it but what we all were certain about the inevitable end game. Kathy gave him his final few hours of love and affectionate. Later that evening the vet decided that Scruffy had suffered enough and he was put to sleep – at last a respite from his unnecessary suffering. The previous owner of this dog should hang their head in shame. God’s speed Scruffy – taken from our lives but always present in our hearts. XXX
