Bailey and his brother Bruno were surrendered by their owners who could no longer look after them.
Bailey has never been without his brother until now and is understandably finding it difficult. He does not like being left alone even at night but he is beginning to learn that ‘out of sight’ does not mean ‘gone away’. He is only with us a few days and has already improved so much; given a little time and patience he will have no problem sleeping alone but given his age he will need someone at home most of the day.
That aside he is a perfect dog. He is so well behaved that you forget he is only a pup (then he reminds you by getting over excited when playing with the kids).
He will sit and give the paw and within an hour of first seeing his new toy he had learned to fetch. Until he came to us he had never been walked on an extending lead or without his brother but he now loves his independence on the long lead; he will need a little further lead training as he pulls a bit but our nine and ten year olds are well able to handle him. Because of his age he has not been off the lead but he does come to call or to a clicker (for a reward!).
He is a typical puppy with other dogs when out on walks – brazen and even barking if they are not allowed to greet and submissive and playful when they are.
As you can see he is a stunner and gets lots of attention on walks – many people assume he is a small Golden Retriever. He is medium sized already and still has a little growing to do – my guess would be that he will be Setter sized rather than Collie sized so will need a large garden and long walks when fully grown.
He is great with our kids and doesn’t nip or bite; occasionally, like all puppies, he gets over excited when encouraged but a pretend yelp from the boys stops him in his tracks.
I have no doubt that he will be a wonderful family pet.
But snap him up quick as he will be in big demand.

Bailey has been settling in well over the past week.
He still misses the company of his brother and, while he is improving in this regard, he would best suit a home with another dog.
He had a trip to the vet last week for neutering and chipping and this was the first time I had him in the car; he was a perfect passenger, laying down for the whole trip without a budge or whimper. The veterinary nurse said he was the most placid dog she had seen in a long time.

I can certainly vouch for this as he was the picture of calm when I gave him a shower a few days later.

After the vet visit we had a few days of R&R and then he was ready for a return to proper walks. Earlier this week we took the plunge and let him off the lead; he was great – always looking over his shoulder to be sure you were still close by and coming to a whistle, call or clicker. He is still as good as ever on the lead but he now gets a good gallop off the lead on every walk.

Bailey has shown more than a passing interest in cats on our walks and while the jury is still out as to what he might do (if anything) should he get close enough, it might be better if his new home had no cats. We have walked him off lead close to birds and he has shown no interest in chasing them; we have also walked him on a long lead on the canal bank and he has shown only a passing interest in ducks or swans.
He gets on with every dog we meet perhaps because they recognise that he is a pup.
He does have a tendancy to chew whatever is to hand but I put this partly down to his age and partly to his dislike of being alone (it usually happens at night). As with most pups the trick is to have enough toys and few other chewable alternatives. I am sure that with time and particularly the company of another dog this would stop.
Given a loving home with one or more dogs, Bailey will make an excellent family pet.
