Nigel is a great laid back fella He gets on great with other dogs, travels well in the car and would suit an active house

August 13, 2011 at 7:27 pm #106018KittywittyMemberJust a quick update to say how brilliant, fantastic and rewarding Nigel is, i am at a loss at how this dog could ever be an unwanted dog. We collected Nigel from his foster mum, Helen, down in Wexford and he instantly became a massive hit with all our family and friends. He settled in great, we had a bit of a "near miss" a couple of days later and realised that the information that DID sends you about adopting a dog is to be read and followed…..we let him off the lead and he got out of the park. After a very scary four hours and several phone calls later to Kathy we mercifully found him….as she said, back in the park.
After learning a valuable lesson we are now firmly back on track with him, he goes up to the dog run in Marlay Park every day as well as daily runs with my husband and I….he sleeps very soundly at night i can promise you!!
As mentioned he started training with Emmaline and seems to be responding well.
Just wanted to thank Helen, Kathy, Tara etc we are absolutely over the moon with him and can’t ever imagine how we managed without him before.
Thanks Emma and Aidan

August 21, 2011 at 12:27 am #106101DID RescueKeymasterGreat photo…..the humans limbering up and the dog chilled just taking 5……fantastic
Delighted to hear he is settling in so well and part of the family so easily
Such a good looking boy and I think he now knows it.
Great happy ending for a great boyMarch 3, 2012 at 8:35 am #108704KittywittyMemberJust a quick update on Nigel our beloved Tri-Colour Collie we adopted in August. What can we say? The best dog ever! The friendliest, happiest most lovable dog i have ever known. A dog that doesn’t just tolerate kids, he seeks them out and wants them to throw things, give him rubs, chase him…..A true family pet
We unfortunately found out last month that he has an Autoimmune condition which causes him to produce antibodies which attack the platelets in his blood. We found this out the hard way as we had no clue he carried the genes and also, this happens spontaneously which meant that his red-blood cells went fatally low, and he began bleeding internally and went into severe shock. After rushing him to the emergency vet clinic at UCD a brilliant vet picked up on what it was immediately through sheer luck she had seen one case of this before on a dog like him years ago. Its rare; especially as he is a mixed collie and also a boy, but she knew what to do straight away and saved him. A very upsetting few days.
Anyhow after a bit of rest and lots of medication he is back to his best, he will need monitoring and treatment for the rest of his life but that’s fine as at least we know now and now what the symptoms of an episode look like.
Of course we didn’t have pet insurance, it was my husbands responsibility…….he sleeps in the kennel now!!! It was simply on a long list of things to do….
As we speak Nigel is off chasing balls in the park, i feel strongly that Nigel’s life is to be filled with the things that make him happy; chasing balls, going in the river, chasing squirrels! I won’t keep him in just to keep him "safe". Even his life is to be shorter (which fingers crossed it won’t) it is going to be happy!
Thanks again
Emma

March 3, 2012 at 9:58 am #108709ColganFamilyMemberAlways one of my favourites on the website, it is great to see Nigel looking so well and so happy. Thanks for the lovely update. I am so sorry to hear about his condition but if it can be managed then he is a lucky guy to have found such a family! Best of luck for the future.
March 3, 2012 at 6:20 pm #108699IndiannaMemberNow, you are the gold standard of adopters. Your recent blog about Nigel’s medical problem is sad but the fact he is and will always be a member of your family has filled my heart with joy. A happy, beautiful dog who will be cared for properly for the rest of his life, well, that is just great. A very, very lucky dog and its good for my soul to know that there are people like yourselves on this planet
March 4, 2012 at 12:40 am #108417DID RescueKeymasterI am both happy and sad after reading this update.
This poor boy was in a pound unwanted, neglected and abandonded.
He was due to be pts when DID took him out.
After all that he finds his family who love and appreciate his talents and then this medical condition
Why is life so cruel……..Why is there no balance.Thank you for being there for him when he needed it
I don’t know enough about this illness but I will now set about informing myself as I am sure there may be some complimentary medicines out there that may help.May 27, 2012 at 7:56 pm #109045KittywittyMemberJust a quick update on Nigel, he’s nearly back to normal health wise, has the odd "lazy" day but other than that he’s back bugging us for constant walks! He will be on his tablets for the rest of his life but hopefully it will be tapered down to only a couple a week and that will be it. He goes for more blood tests this week and then it should only be needed every couple of months. A tiny price to pay for the happiness we get in return.
There was mutiny in the house the other week when the subject of our foreign summer holiday was discussed with the kids absolutely refusing to go abroad and leave Nigel behind so this year we will be staying here and looking for "dog friendly" destinations- if anyone has any suggestions please feel free to suggest away.
Took some new pics to put up….getting better at using my phone!
