    Hi folks,

    Sorry this took a while to come through to me and needed tech assistance to put it up on the forum! :D One of the nurses who is in charge of the Hills / Weight Management Clinic at our Vets also spoke to Hills regarding this and she was happy with the reassurance that they gave her. We have started to use Hills again (had held off until we got a response from them) but am going to see the Vet tomorrow about Roxy’s spay so will show her the reply and just double check her opinion on what they’ve said. ;) So, here is the reply from Hills in its entirety, have a look and judge for yourselves……..

    Thank you for taking the time to contact us with your concerns. We appreciate having this opportunity to help.

    As you are aware, nutrition is very important in the health of our pets throughout their lives and, for your reassurance, our products are developed by vets, food scientists and many other experts that are dedicated to providing the most advanced range of products. We are committed to ensuring that pet owners receive nutritionally balanced, quality products, made from quality ingredients.

    Food antioxidants are required in dry products to protect against fat rancidity and maintain freshness and flavour. Hill’s Prescription Diet Canine r/d dry food contains a blend of the food antioxidants BHA and BHT (butylated hydroxyanisole and butylated hydroxytoluene). These synthetic antioxidants have been widely used by the manufacturers of human foods and pet foods because they are both safe and effective. They are most effective when used in combination.

    Hill’s Prescription Diet Canine r/d canned food does not contain food antioxidants. Food antioxidants are unnecessary in canned foods because, after opening, they are exposed to air for only a short time before being eaten. Any unused portion of a canned food should be covered and refrigerated and consumed within 5-7 days.

    We are committed to ensuring that pet owners receive quality products, made from quality ingredients. The ingredients in Hill’s products are stringently inspected, high quality products approved for animal consumption and all of our suppliers are required to certify that their ingredients satisfy our stringent specifications, which ensures that all the ingredients in our production are of a very high and consistent standard. We are pleased to confirm that our meat ingredients are from animals that have been certified as fit for human consumption.

    As you are probably aware, the Internet is an unregulated medium where individuals’ opinions are shared, regardless of accuracy of facts and supporting evidence. In addition, sometimes information on websites is not reviewed/updated and, for these reasons, it can be misleading. Correction of inaccurate information on the Internet is unrealistic. Instead, we dedicate our time and resources to our commitment, which is to provide and continue to develop the best, leading-edge products to support the nutritional needs of healthy dogs and cats, as well as the nutritional needs of dogs and cats with health problems. As you will appreciate, time and money spent in this way is of much more benefit to pets and their owners.

    We hope this information is of reassurance and, once again, thank you for contacting us. If we can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to call our free Helpline, 1 800 626 002.

    That response is helpful. However, one of the reasons I was concerned about a popular wellknown brand of DRY dog food was the use of organic preservatives (preventing fat from going rancid).

    The International Agency for Research on Cancer (part of the World Health Organization) considers;
    BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene): "there is limited evidence for the carcinogenicity of butylated hydroxytoluene in experimental animals".

    BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole): "there is sufficient evidence for the carcinogenicity of butylated hydroxyanisole to experimental animals".
