We’ve taken Kuma into foster with us. She is badly in need of some tlc and good food, the poor girl hasn’t had the best start in life and she is skin and bone and most of her hair is falling out due to malnutrition amongst other things. She needs to be nursed back to health before we can even look into rehoming her just yet but just want to keep you all updated on her progress. She’s so lovely and friendly and very playful. Herself and Ruby were getting on like a house on fire when we took her home and I got some great pics of them playing so I’ll post them up. She’s going to look so great when we get her weight up to normal and her coat back in shape.

August 25, 2009 at 7:38 am #87683martinacMembersuch great news..this poor girl really has been through the mill but know she got lots of attention from ricardos in the pound and is the better for it! well done..keep us posted!
September 1, 2009 at 5:33 pm #87906martinacareyMemberWell Kuma’s getting on great. She didn’t like being left on her own at first but she’s grand on her own now or with Kas and she loves sleeping on the couch so she’s happy to be left now and catch a few Zzz’s. She’s starting to look better, she’s putting on weight but it’s a bit of a slow process and her hair is starting to grow back and her coat in general is improving alot. She loves her food and can’t eat enough most times. We also discovered how true to her intelligent breed she is, we’ve heard and read stories of Akita’s that can get up to all kinds of things and she’s been surprising us with a few things! She can escape out of the cage, that wasn’t a problem to her. She can open doors, presses but only the ones that have the dog food. Then when we got around these little things we came home from dinner the other night to find she had taken the lid off the bin and taken out a few empty things to see what goodies she could find! We just laughed, if you had of seen how neatly she had laid things out on the floor and didn’t even knock the bin over. She’s a neat thief at least We gave her a bath too and she was very well behaved and didn’t even try to get out. Here’s some pics of her first bath!
October 3, 2009 at 3:50 pm #88816justineemoeMemberWhat a gorgeous dog! How is she getting on? She did look incredibly thin in the earlier pictures. Is she back to a good weight or will it take a little longer than that? I’ve never met an Akita actually. Have there been any more examples of her intelligence since last you posted?? Would love to hear more.
October 3, 2009 at 6:34 pm #88769ladlesMemberKuma was at the DID fun day last Sunday. You were so busy Justine that you had no time to see and meet all the lovely dogs. Kuma is looking fantastic and was so placid and well behaved. Lovely dog.
October 5, 2009 at 5:00 pm #88860martinacareyMemberKuma is getting on great now, she’s putting on weight but still has some more to put on. Her hair has grown back now and the difference in her now compared to when we first took her home from the pound. We hope to get her spayed soon and hopefully find her a lovely forever home. She’s going to be hard to say goodbye to though as she’s such a sweetheart! She loves her cuddles and gives loads of kisses and is so playful. We have a little stray yorkie with us at the moment and she’s even playing with him and being more gentle realising how small he is! She’s very well behaved, the only thing she still does is go through the bins looking for food so we just put the bins in the hall when we leave the house. Even though she’s getting fed now she still hasn’t forgot how she used to survive scavaging for food the poor thing. It’s not a huge problem and I know she will get out of it, it’s only happened a couple of times and only when we weren’t there and she’s not just being destructive it’s just how she learned to survive. I’ll post up some new pics of her soon.

October 14, 2009 at 7:51 pm #81587martinacareyMemberKuma is getting on great, she’s such a great foster dog and there’s no minding on her at all. Her and Kas are getting on great and it’s been so long since Kas had a foster dog she could play with properly. Kuma loves to play and when she gets really excited she runs around the garden all crazy it’s so funny to watch. It must be an Akita thing coz Kas does the crazy run thing too. She loves her walks and also loves her sleep. She’s getting spayed on Monday so I hope she’s ok and not too confused when we leave her into the vets.
October 14, 2009 at 8:33 pm #81577JennyMemberWell done you two – she is totally transformed.
