Adoption FAQs

Start by filling out our Adoption Application Form. Once we receive your application, a volunteer will contact you to arrange a home visit. If approved, we’ll help you find a dog suited to your lifestyle and guide you through every step.

Yes — the minimum adoption donation is €300. This covers microchipping, vaccinations, worming, and spaying/neutering (where age-appropriate).

Yes, but you’ll need written permission from your landlord and must show that your living space allows for adequate exercise and comfort for your dog.

Absolutely. Once your application is approved, we’ll arrange a meet-and-greet with the foster family so you can spend time with the dog before making a decision.

We primarily focus on rehoming within Ireland, but on occasion, dogs have been successfully adopted internationally through partner rescues.

Fostering FAQs

Fostering means temporarily caring for a rescue dog in your home until they’re adopted.

It varies, but most dogs stay in foster care for 4–8 weeks. Some may need shorter or longer stays depending on their needs.

No — Dogs in Distress covers all veterinary expenses and can provide food, toys, and supplies upon request.

That’s wonderful! Many “foster fails” turn into happy adoptions. Just let our team know, and we’ll guide you through the adoption process.

Dog Care & Health FAQs

Dogs should have an annual health check and stay up to date with vaccinations, flea, and worm treatments. Senior dogs or those with conditions may need more frequent visits.

A balanced diet of high-quality dry food (complete kibble) is best. Avoid tinned foods with added salt or sugar. You can mix in fresh ingredients like boiled chicken, rice, or vegetables for variety.

Chewing is normal, especially in young or anxious dogs. Redirect the behavior to chew toys, provide mental stimulation, and ensure they get enough exercise.

Some are safe (carrots, apples, cooked chicken), but avoid toxic foods like chocolate, grapes, onions, garlic, and xylitol.

Keep their environment calm, maintain a routine, and give them space to settle. Most dogs need 2–3 weeks to feel truly comfortable.
